It is no longer an unusual scenario for a woman to run a business of her own. If the surveys are any indication, women are, in fact, giving men a run for their money. Between 2002 and 2006, existing female-owned businesses expanded faster than male-owned businesses in 40 states of the US. The female population is finding out the perks of running a home-based business ever more. Hence, for women on the lookout for that perfect small business idea, the following tips provide a good headstart:
Online Industry
In this day and age, there is a host of jobs that one can do with the help of the Internet. If you have sufficient knowledge and expertise, then you can offer to create websites for businesses belonging to your family members and friends. If that is too unfamiliar to you, then starting your own home writing business is another good option. Here, you have the liberty to work as a freelance writer for some sites that provide technical papers, resumes and college essays. Or, if you are more into research, then conducting online surveys and compiling resource lists are not bad ideas either.
Art Industry
Many women have creative skills that can be turned into small business ideas. For instance, handicrafts such as knitting, crocheting and jewelry making can all make for a good business. It is up to you whether you wish to sell your creations in local stores or online sites. Another appealing idea is creating gift baskets. This one has a low overhead, and you can come up with unique knickknacks and gift basket as needed. Also, you don’t want to take for granted skills such as baking or catering. Start a cupcake or meal delivery service. The best part is that all of these ideas allow you to work right from home.
Pet Industry
As long as there are pet owners willing to pamper their pets, then you can always tap the pet industry as your niche. Open a doggie daycare center, complete with a fenced-in yard, play toys and small wading pool for cooling off. However, don’t forget to consult with the health department to learn about legal requirements if you are operating this business from home, and check out the existing policies in the event that something happens to pets while they are under your care.
There is a wide range of small business ideas for everybody, particularly for women. Just remember that as you start your own venture, it will be best to match your current interests and passions with a well-thought-out business plan.
